How to Dress Well on a Budget for Men

Are you in the mood to give your wardrobe a sexier, more stylish look? What if I were to tell you that you can do just that and much more without the need to spend a dime?

I (Andrew) am about to give you some advice I personally follow to achieve that goal. Trust me, you will feel a huge difference once you’ve learned about these tips and put them to practice yourself. You will gain more confidence as a result, and people will start to give you more compliments as well, guaranteed!

Without further ado, I leave you to my “How to Dress Well on a Budget for Men” guide.

Take a Closer Look – Examine Your Options

Take a Closer LookHow many times have you opened the doors to your wardrobe or pulled your drawers out, looking for something different to wear, even though you probably already know every single piece you own? Or do you? It’s hard to come up with new ideas once you believe you’ve tried it all, I know. But that’s where the key is. You may not have tried every single combination your closet has to offer.

By this point, whether you realize it or not, you are most likely already used to putting together the same outfits over and over again. I don’t blame you, having the certainty that a specific attire will make you look as sharp as the last time you came up with the same idea is comforting.

Well, I disagree. In my case, I eventually get bored. I am of the kind that likes to innovate, to come up with new ideas and test them.

So, I encourage you to take a closer look at what you have in front of you and come up with at least five new outfit ideas you’ve never tried before. However, it is crucial that you try them on, too.

Overcome Laziness – Don’t Just Grab What’s in Front of You

It is hard to break the habit, I understand, but only good habits lead to success.

This is an easy one to tackle, actually. If you’ve read my tip above, then, see this as the next step. Not only have you created new outfits with what you already own, but you should also have exposed a larger range of options. Be creative, place yourself in front of the mirror and decide which ideas you’ll keep and which ones you’ll discard. Don’t be discouraged, though, as there are many other possibilities right at your hand’s reach.

I can also suggest going online to look for even more ideas. Take what you have, see what others are doing with similar items, and try to follow suit (no pun intended). The aim here is not imitating others, but rather giving an already existing idea your personal touch.

Remember, it’s about finding your style, expressing yourself trough what you wear.

Take Your Time – Plan Ahead of Time

Take Your Time

For me, this was one of the most difficult aspects to change about my routine. For the longest time, I couldn’t get myself to plan the night before what I would wear the next day, and I can’t recommend it enough. You can do this before going to bed, for example. Think about what kind of activities you’ve got prepared for the next day, and plan out an outfit accordingly. This is such an effective way to ensure you won’t be running against the clock the next morning. Not only will you succeed at looking more stylish than ever, you’ll even have more time for your other morning activities.

One of the best ways to start off the day is by having a positive mentality, and this truly is one way to manage exactly that. Give this a try for a couple of weeks, and I assure you this will change your mornings for the better.

To be honest, I struggled with this at the beginning, but I have now made it a habit of mine, and I could not be any happier about it. The fact that I now have more time during my mornings also makes me feel more energetic, and I can accomplish more throughout the day. I’ve become more productive.

I’m telling you, you will see great results for this.

Donate or Sell – Do You Really Need All of It?

I think we’ve all been there. How many times have you ever said to yourself: “Oh, I didn’t remember I still had this! I guess I’ll keep it for later, I might wear it some other day.” Now, be honest, have you actually done so? If yes, congratulations, you are one of the few. But for the rest of us, the best idea is to get rid of those clothes.

You’re probably still disagreeing with me at this point, but hear me out. Are you really going to wear it some day? Or do you keep repeating that to yourself to avoid having to say good-bye to it? I mean, there’s a reason why it’s been kept “hidden” for such a long time, right? Yes, and I get you, we sometimes get too attached to our clothes, but a much wiser decision is to free some space in your wardrobe. You want to keep it clean and be able to take a better look at what you have much quicker so you can come up with new ideas, as we’ve already discussed before, and become more efficient at the same time.

Donating to charity is always an excellent idea. You’ll bring a smile to someone else’s face.

Selling is another option. Sometimes, we buy things we don’t even end up using. If this is the case for you, you can always re-sell as an alternative to donating.

A third possibility is hand-me-downs. Either to a friend, a family member, or to your neighbor, they will appreciate your consideration. I have received hand-me-downs from both my siblings and cousins, and I try to make the best use out of them. There is nothing to be ashamed of. On the contrary, I feel lucky to have such good people around me.

It Really Isn’t About the Money

As you’ve learned thus far, there are many, many ways you can give your wardrobe a twist and, consequently, treat yourself to trying out new looks and gaining more confidence along the way. You can definitely still rock your clothes in ways you haven’t done so before, and money does not have to be a part of it.

It is all about being creative and thinking outside the box. In other instances, you just have to stop and take a deep breath before you continue.

Hi, Andy. I know exactly what you mean. For years, I couldn’t get myself to plan ahead, but once I started doing it I also started to understand how it could benefit me in the long run. One example is that now I feel like my mornings are more organized than ever, and this gives me the chance to either get more things done or just do them at a more relaxed pace.

Dressing on budget is also a struggle for me. If I may add one more suggestion, try to ‘dig’ deeper in your wardrobe. Last time, I found my unused navy blue jeans, hidden under many of my shirts. I was about to buy a new jeans, and now I don’t need to.

I hope you find it useful 🙂 Thanks for the informative article.

That’s true, Alexander, and a really nice idea, too. I will definitely keep that in mind. I can totally see how it helped you; and you were even able to save up some money thanks to it, which is always a good thing!

I appreciate you sharing with us! Have a great day!

My husband definitely needs to read this!

I feel that most of the time men are just wanting something easy to digest and most male friends of mine would rather spend more time on online games than putting some effort into their dressing styles! Gotta show them this article!

    • Andrew Reply

Thank you, Crystal! I understand what you mean. Sometimes, we get distracted by other activities and may often forget how important it is to pay attention to our own image. We must avoid taking it for granted.

      Enjoy your week!

Awesome article man! I know what you mean about thinking you’ve already worn all the possible outfits, when in reality there are loads more possibilities that you could go for if you thought about it. Donating clothes to charity shop is a great idea, and you never know, you might find something you like for yourself while you’re there!

    • Andrew Post authorReply

You’re absolutely right, Benji, you might even find a thing or two you might like while you’re there. That’s a great suggestion.

Thank you so much for your support and time to stop by!

I’m loving this article. Such a simple concept but we really don’t think about these things. We always feel like we need more more more. I was just talking about how my wardrobe needs a revamp but also how I just quit my 9-5 to pursue entrepreneurship so I probably won’t be doing too much shopping just yet, haha. Thank you for this as it definitely puts things into perspective. Shoot, I have so many clothing and accessory items. I need to get in there and get creative!

Also, I was considering thrifting.. Have you ever tried this? Maybe an article soon on it!? 😀

    • Andrew Post authorReply

Thanks, Stefani! Sometimes we just forget we own more than we think, until we take the time to dig in. It’s almost like finding cash inside your pockets, you forget it was there altogether, but the surprise you get from finding it is as if you’re seeing it for the first time!

Thrift shopping was definitely in my mind as I was writing this article, so I will for sure write a post on it in the future!

Great site. Well organized. Clothing department is getting more online. Sad to see the malls might go.

    • Andrew Post authorReply

Thanks, Scott, I am happy that you liked it. Yes, in the future, more and more stores will start leaving the malls, but we’ve still got time before they’re completely gone. Thanks for stopping by!
